There are a lot of good "locations" in San Francisco. To demonstrate, let me list some of the top hotels in various areas:

Here's one of the best hotels downtown:
Four Seasons

Here's two places across the street from each other on top of Nob Hill:

Here's a place near Fisherman's Wharf:

Here's a place near the Ferry Building (whch is also near the Financial District).

Here's a place across the street from Washington Square (in the heart of Little Italy) and not far from Fisherman's Wharf and Telegraph Hill:

And here's a very popular one in the heart of the shopping district:

My own favorite is the Pan Pacific--just a block from the Westin St. Francis, but more reasonably priced. I like to eat at the restaurant on the 46th floor of the Hilton, which is about 3 blocks away--and the largest nightclub in town is less than 1 block away.

P.S. The restaurant on the top of the Hilton is currently closed--I don't know if they are converting this floor to hotel penthouse suites or if they are refurbishing the restaurant--I hope it is the latter. The nightclub is Ruby Skye:

By "extended stay", I believe the OP wants self-catering at low cost? That will be hard to find in the downtown area - near impossible (that type accommodation is available down on the Peninsula past the airport). Have a look at the Beresford Arms at Post/Jones St. in lower Nob Hill. They have jr. suites with kitchen that are very nice at a very good location (Cala market at Hyde/California St.)

I used to live in this neighborhood, and you can walk from that location all over SF.
