I think it's foolish to try this in one day. Yosemite is well worth stopping for at least one night. When are you coming - if you're talking mid-summer, be prepared for major traffic delays in Yosemite Valley (you would be forced to find a motel then). The 10,000' Tioga Pass route (only open in summer) is well worth the effort, and I believe this is the most direct route into Nevada.

If you really need to rush, you need to avoid Yosemite and take I-5 to S. California (a really really boring drive) - might as well fly! In any case, why rush past some of the most scenic country in the world. South of SF, the Monterey Peninsula is spectacular - the drive down Route #1 is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that must be driven very slowly for both the scenery and for safety!

Another option would be to spend 4 days in SF and just two full days (3 nights) in Vegas. Both are enough for a first visit, surely for Vegas.

That way you'll have 3 days left (assuming 4 nights), which can be spend in Yosemite (2-3 nights) and Death Valley (1-2 nights). Both parks are great and totally different of course. I just did it the opposite direction earlier this month. The drive from Yosemite to Death Valley over the Tioga Pass and down the eastside of the Sierra Nevada is just fantastic with awesome scenery.

Just an extra option to consider..;)
