Bangkok was not impacted by the earthquake or tsunami and is open. Areas further south in Thailand have been greatly impacted, though.

Cheers greg...

I eventually spoke to STA and apparently we can still travel to BK, although it looks like there will be little point travelling down to the south west! it must be awful for everyone down there.

By the way merry christmas everyone.

BKK airport isn't closed at all, they closed the Phuket airport. But the Phuket airport has been reopened.

Just spoke to my professor traveling from India to BKK and he said he got in ok. I am quite sure that the airport BKK is up and running, mainly the airport in/out of Phuket and other Andaman Sea cities were affected by this natural disaster..
Enjoy Thailand, Sawatdee Krup.

It's safe here in Bangkok (where I am). We didn't even feel the shake. Actually, I know some people who live far away from the beaches in those provinces that got impacts. Some of them learned about the disaster just from TV. Tsunami impact swept only the area close to the beaches.

Other parts of Thailand are still fine. Lucky, this time of the year, most people prefer travelling north to see nice flowers and feel cool weather.

Just in from Sky News, "You won't be able to travel to Sri Lanka and Thailand for at least 10 days"

Thanks for everyone's replies.

The foreign office here says its fine to travel to my friend and I will be leaving the UK tomorrow morning! It is a shame we may not get to visit the south west coast but I am certain that we will find northern thailand/vietnam/cambodia equally beautiful and interesting. Does anyone in BK know whats going on, on new years eve by any chance?

I read in the news that the Thai government is calling off all new year countdown celebrations.
