After visiting family in Michigan we did a quick overnighter in Chicago. What a blast. Since all of our vacations tend to be of the beach, small town or national park variety this was a new and exciting experience.

I thought DC was beautiful but Chicago has it beat. I couldn't believe how clean and blue Lake Michigan looked from downtown. The city was very very clean. We took a boat tour that described all the architecture and history of the buildings along the Chicago River, this is a must do. Only bad thing was Geno's East Pizza. Knowing full well that it was a tourist trap we went anyway. There was an hour wait outdoors that we skipped by sitting at the bar. We ordered our pizza during the 2nd inning of the White Sox game, it arrive in the bottom of the 8th. Now I understand that it was busy and we were told about 45 minutes. But it was close to an hour and a half and really screwed up our evening plans. But I have to admit it was good.

Anyway I highly recommend Chicago. I know this is not exactly news to the seasoned American traveler but thought I'd post it anyway.

So glad you enjoyed Chicago!! It does have it's moments! We'll be there tomorrow for family birthday celebrations. (We make the trip about 12+ times a year and rarely see much of the city except out the window of a family member's apartment.)

Pizza is coming from Sarpino's which is pretty good pizza.

I am going to Chicago in late August and wonder if you have any must-sees? I am on my go to British Columbia to study, so I only have a few days but I have only heard positive things about the place :)

Do the boat trip. Seriously, it was recommended and pretty much everyone I've talked with who have visited Chicago has done it. There are a few different ones, one that goes out in the lake and another (called the Architecture tour or something like that) that tours the city by river. This is the one we took and you simply have to do it.
