Travelling home from Bolivia to the UK

Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean Travelling home from Bolivia to the UK

Hi guys, I'm planning on going on a trip to Ecuador, Peru and then Bolivia next summer. The one problem I'm having is how to get home from Bolivia as the airport in La Paz only goes to Miami outside of SA. I roughly costed it flying from La Paz to Miami and then to London and it was working out around £900. The other way I thought of doing it was to fly to Lima first and then to the UK but again this is costing roughly the same.

I'm flying into Quito and would have ideally been able to fly back there from Bolivia as I could then have just got a return flight which would work out cheaper. I can't find an airline that goes from La Paz to Quito however so this isn't really an option.

Does anyone have any other suggestions as to possible ways of doing it that are slightly cheaper?

I think your best bet would be a roundtrip - oneways are for the rich! I don't believe any airline flies that route nonstop, but you can get there on Copa with a few stops. By the way, Caracas would be the cheapest place in SA to fly into from Britain.

I like to search with Momondo.com - if you use the calendar option, it shows which days are cheaper to fly.

good luck, and buy well in advance for the best price

Thanks for the reply Daawgon, it really is much appreciated.

I'll look into using Copa airlines to get back to Quito from La Paz and see how much it'd cost. I'd really like to just book a return flight to Quito as it is only as it's working out around £400 cheaper than flying into one city and home from another.

You mentioned flying into Caracas and that being the cheapest city to fly into. I don't really think that would be an option for me as I'm not planning on going to Venezuela while I'm there, Just Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.

The only alternative I can think of is to check if options are better/cheaper from Aerosur flies to Madrid directly, according to the wikipage. From there I guess a budget flight to the UK is easy and cheap.

Sorry Michael just to double check, did you mean from Madrid to Quito using Aerosur?

Thanks

Hi Keiran,

Guess I misunderstood the question, as it said Bolivia to UK, and the options from La Paz were not very great/cheap. I thought I might just point you to the option of flying out of Santa Cruz (wiki link from the airport in last post, see that I tagged it Aerosur instead of Santa Cruz, sorry) to Madrid. Or are you looking for one airline to buy a return ticket from the UK to South America?
I am not sure about your budget, but KLM also has direct flights to Quito, Lima and Guayaquil.

Cheers
Michael

Hi Michael,

thankyou for taking the time to reply once again!

My original question was: I'm finishing my trip in La Paz. Is there a cheaper way of getting home to the UK from La Paz than getting a flight from La Paz to Quito and getting a flight back from Quito to the UK?

Thanks,
Keiran

No problem Keiran;)
Well, the Aerosur option might be one of them, although you have to go to Santa Cruz for that instead, but if you manage to travel around in Bolivia you can choose to end in Santa Cruz.
I am afraid that in general it won't be very cheap though. The best you can do is buy a return ticket instead of two separate one-way tickets with different airlines. I found the momondo.com link mentioned before quite helpful, they usually have great offers. you might try it

Right I just costed it all out there using the website you recommended. It's going to work out about £1300 in total to fly into Quito at the start of my trip (one way), fly out of Santa Cruz to Madrid at the end of the trip (one way) and from Madrid back to the UK.

That really is quite expensive and I think it works out cheaper flying in to Quito, getting a flight from La Paz to Quito and flying home from there again at the end of the trip.

Thankyou anyway for the help!
