I'm planning a trip in August to the South France and Italy. I'm ok with the various places i'll be visiting in Provence, however, with Italy i'm still a bit sketchy. I've already visited Rome and would prefer somewhere that isn't a honeypot location, with tourists buzzing around like bees. Also, could anyone tell me the cheapest form of transport from France to Italy, whether its by rail, road or air.

Any recommendations/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,
G :)

Easiest way to get from South France to Italy is from Nice/Monte Carlo, taking a train from there to Ventimiglia.

Re locations: it depends on how much time you have and where you want to end up. Assuming you want a round that begins and ends in Nice, you could do something like this:

  • Nice - trains via Ventimiglia (change in Monte Carlo) to
  • Genova - train to
  • Piacenza - train to
  • Parma - train to
  • Mantova - train to
  • Bologna - train to
  • Prato/Pistoia - train to
  • Lucca - trains back to
  • Nice via Genova/Ventimiglia/Monte Carlo

The obvious choice is to include Florence as well.

This little loop gives you a beautiful yet not too touristy piece of Italy, with nice cities and exceptional food.

Thank you so much for your suggestions, this has given me a good starting point. I've never travelled by train through Europe before, which train/ticket would you recommend I purchase? Preferably the cheapest.

Im not sure when in august you are planning to go, but me and my friend are currently travelling around Europe in our VW camper van. We are in Paris now but heading to the south of france very soon. we will stay with friends there for some time, and it may be august before we head further east (to Italy)

We are looking for people to travel with, if you would be interested it is probably more economical than the train, as the cost of petrol would be split between three (or maybe more!)

Anyway let me know of your plans, if you want to convene!

Bon voyage!

Hey VWguys,

I've finally sat down to plan this trip and it turns out we have less time than anticipated. Unfortunately we're going to drop Italy this summer and stick with Provence, France.
It sounds as though you guys are enjoying your trip around Europe and making the most of your Camper Van (you'll have to post some photos up on this site).

Enjoy the rest of your trip, maybe you could recommend some places you visit in South France.

Take care, G :)
