Ive just signed up to this website as reading this thread was really interesting. Me and my boyfriend will be arriving in Sydney on 5th Dec. Im still abit confused on the whole bank account thing as I went on the NAB website and didn't if I just sign up as normal? I was going to pay through HSBC over here but want to save money. Also am trying to look for hostels over the xmas period, had no idea they book up so quick. just shows how much you need to know even before you get there.

Hi everyone,
My name is amelia and I'm 22.
I've been reading this thread as really considering going to oz at the end of December for around 4 weeks, which I hope is long enough.
I've wanted to go travelling for a while now and finally been told can get the time off work so really looking into it all and the best things to do ands visit when there. Would really like to see the East Coast and be in Sydney for NYE, but reading this, that may not be possible!
I was looking at the Oz Intro too, as thought it would be a great way to meet people when I get there, as I am going on my own and this is my biggest worry. Just wondered about people going on there own and how easy it is to meet people when you get there. The Oz Intro just sounded good too as you know there's someone there when you get there. Just don't want to get there and be lost!
Any tips on anything would be great, as I think I'm just a bit stuck on what I should do and you all seem to have a lot planned :) x

For a four weeks trip, I really wouldn't bother with oz intro. They're geared toward backpackers who'll spend a year in Australia, and for whom its more-or-less cost-effective to stay in Sydney for a week and do touristy activities for that time while someone else is holding their hand doing the administrative things that you need to do when over there for so long. You wouldn't benefit from their help with finding work, nor from having a bank account set up, nor from arranging a tax file number, etc, etc, and although Sydney is a great city, it'd be a shame to spend a full quarter of your time in just the one city.

It's really ridiculously easy to meet people in hostels when you're travelling by yourself. Just make certain you don't go to the huge 200+ bed hostels but to some smaller ones where you actually start to recognize people relatively swiftly, sit yourself down in the lounge with a cup of tea and a book, and I'll guarantee that you'll be chatting with a random fellow traveller within the hour (if you weren't already doing so in the kitchen while still in the process of making that cup of tea). Obviously it depends on yourself how open you are for keeping a conversation going, and with most travellers you'll need to push a bit to get beyond the "where are you from, where have you been, where are you going next?" spiel, but you should never have to fear being at a loss for someone to chat with. Obviously you'll be on the move from place to place, and so will others, so it won't be trivial to meet someone with whom you can keep in touch for a longer stretch of time, but if you do get a click with someone else, you can always adjust your travel plans to just venture out together for a while.

heya sarah,

im off to aus in dec on my own too. i thought about using ozintro but decided to do it all myself instead. how far along in your planning are you. im just trying to think about which hostel to stay at, ive got a kinda short list for my first hostel.
what are you planning to do over xmas and new years? im definetly doing the bondi beach xmas day party and for new years the harbour bridge and back to bondi. Do you have a plan of where you want to travel throughout your stay or are you just going to see where the wind takes you?
