mnorris has indicated that this thread is about Sri Lanka

I was planning to travel to Sri Lanka in Feburary 2004, but after the recent political difficulties there, specifically the declaration of a state of emergency on the 5th of November I am recomsidering my plans. I was wondering whether anyone has any advice? The state of emergency was lifted after one day - so am I being too cautious in cancelling my trip.

Yes, I believe you are. Unlike in some other countries in the sub continent, Sri Lanka's day to day life does not grind to a halt for 'emergency' regulations. The country was under emegency law from 1983 to 2001. What it means is that it gives certain political powers to the president etc,. The day to day life does not, (and has not) change. and travellers and Sri Lankans on the ground are not at all affected.

There are a number of posts at other forums, where travellers have posted from Sri Lanka about this fact, too.

So my advice, don't worry, go on and enjoy the trip. Contact me if you need any advice on the rip itself.

Have a fun filed holiday

More about Sri Lanka

The Pearl of the Orient - Sri Lanka's bitter civil conflict has belied the country's nickname for half a century. For the tourist, this doesn't mean that Sri Lanka should be erased from the potentials list for this year's holiday; it does, however, mean that some areas of Sri Lanka are to be avoided.
