Information for everyone who enjoys walking or cycling and lives near the North Pennines. Between the 4th-26th September 2010, Blackburn and Darwin are holding a two week Walk & Ride Festival, encouraging people of all ages and abilities to get out and be healthy. Featuring something for everyone-short, medium and long walks, cycle and mountain bike rides ranging from easy to challenging.
There are walking festival events being held on both the West Pennine Moors and the South Pennine Moors. When visiting Horwich, Bolton (where I live) I would recommend coming to Rivington Barn and Country Park. There are loads of secluded parking areas where you can leave your car and spend most of the day exploring. When visiting Rivington go to the lower barn, you can sit outside with a drink or an ice-cream. Next to the lower barn is the gift shop which has the history of Horwich and Rivington. On weekends Rivington tends to get a little busy particularly on a Sunday.
I personally enjoy going on a Sunday because if you walk up to the Higher Barn (5 mins from Lower Barn) you get to see all of the motorbikes. Every Sunday there is a big motorbike gathering where bikers come from all around the Northwest to show off their bikes. There is always burger stalls or if you like to sit down for a meal I recommend going inside the higher Barn as they serve a lovely affordable meal.
I enjoy telling people about Rivington and Belmont Moors. Who knows I might see you there!
