I worked in the media industry in England, and left home in September 2009 to go travelling, I have wound up back in Oz to work out my working holiday visa, and have been lucky enough to get a job in the same kind if field I was working in back home.

Helz - If you need any advice/contacts, etc, give me a shout and I'll try and help as best I can.

100% go! I left London three years ago to go on my travels, despite having a great job for a few years previous. I quit and went to South America then Australia. It's without a doubt been the best decision I've ever made, and one which future employers will admire in you. There are loads of jobs in media in Sydney so I wouldn't worry at all, and anyway, you can always do the backpacker thing and work low-brain-tax jobs then travel then do the same again, before you settle down with another 'responsible job' DO IT, you won't regret it!!!

I'm going it alone! I've been twice already, once i spent 3 weeks backpacking (i was 23) and the second time I stayed in hotels/apartments for 4 weeks with the ex, so i am already familiar with the culture of Australia and have no worries when it comes to travelling there alone (you're never really alone in Oz!)

I booked my flights an hour after getting my visa approved (in april) and got a great price. I travel at the end of october and I'm heading into Perth so i can sort out Medicare, activate my bank account and get my TFN. After that i hope to pick up bar work (hopefully in an outback or surburban setting) for 6 weeks until xmas/nye when i'm just going to chill for 2 weeks before working in and exploring the SW region.

I joined Wwoof this July and have a host set up for the 4th Jan and am really looking forward to this type of work after 10 yrs of office work! I don't mind working for bed and board as these are the 2 things that MUST be paid for throughout my trip anyway, so effectively I'm not earning but not spending either... If this type of work interests you I would recommend taking a look. I'm hoping it will help me to get my 2nd yr visa signed off but anytime I can't find paid work i know I can go and get my hands dirty, meet some nice people, learn a few things and not spend money on a hostel for the sake of it.

Of course if you are looking for more professional work perhaps Bunac may be able to help but there are plenty of websites advertising jobs, if you're unsure as to whether they would employ you on a WHV either ask or search for contract/temp work only. This may save you a lot of money as opposed to paying Bunac or TAW. So would just roaming the streets looking for recruitment agencies :)

I hope you go, I've been 'talking about it' for years. S friend of mine went last year and I've always been so jealous that she had the opportunity and i didn't, until i realised the only thing stopping me from going was ME!! I'm 30 next year so couldn't have left it much longer to get a WHV, I'm so pleased with myself now I've got off my bum and taken my life in the direction i want it to go in xx

If you need another vote to convince yourself to go then here's another!

I currently have a comfortable job with reasonable pay, but I've always had the itch to go to Australia. I thought I was too old for the WHV, but ended up getting one before I turned 31 a few months ago and just thought it's now or never.

There's nothing tying me down or stopping me from going, so I'm going in December and will be quitting the job to do it. I've never done the whole backpacking thing before or really travelled much either. It's just something I want to do so I can say I've got no regrets.

Hey Helz, Its the best thing you'll ever do. I've been to Australia, now I'm off to New Zealand in December for a year. I didn't really pay much attention until I was flying over India, and then it hit me "omg I've just quit my job and I don't know anyone" I wish someone took at picture of me when I landed in Sydney, I was so clueless lol

Good Luck!

Life changing stuff this hun xx Enjoy xx
