Where to stay in Koh Samui

Travel Forums Asia Where to stay in Koh Samui

Me and 3 friends are travelling to Thailand in October. We will be staying Koh Samui for 5 nights and will be going to the Full Moon Party on koh phangan.

We have been advised to stay on koh samui and get the boat over to koh phangan for the party (then back again in the morning). Does anyone have any recommendations of where to stay in koh samui as this is completely new to all of us. We want to be somewhere with a buzzing nightlife and close to where you get the boat from to go over to koh phangan.

Just an area of the island to stay would even be helpful! :)

Nadams

When I visited Koh Samui it I was only there for a couple of nights. I too was on my way to Koh Phangan and did not know much about the island. I do know you want to be near Big Buddha Pier. That is where the ferry takes you directly into Haad Rin. I stayed right near the pier, which is about 10 minutes by taxi from the airport. There are plenty of bars and accommodation near the pier for you to take advantage of. The ferry is only 200 baht(or so it was in 2009) so you can even spend a few days in Koh Phangan before FMP. The only other area I experienced on Koh Samui was Chaweng beach. It was a bit tourist(to say the least) but it had a night life, clubs, bars etc. I wish I could help you out more, hopefully someone with more Koh Samui experience will reply

Hope I helped

Aaron

PS if you have any other questions about Koh Phangan feel free to ask. That is where I stayed in 2009 and I will also be there for the October FMP.

Chaweng beach is where you want to be. This was actually one of my favourite areas in Thailand. You can get some fairly cheap accomodation right on the beach, which is also very close to the shops, bars and nightclubs. Theres about 4 decent sized clubs there which are good and one or two dozen bars - all right next to eachother on the one street.
You have to get a bus from Chewang before the boat to Koh Phangan, but it's not long from memory.

It's a hard choice whether to get the boat back to Samui after the full moon party, or accomodation in Koh Phangan (which would be very hard to book for just 1 night). I've done both on 2 different full moon parties. The first time we had to stay quite a few nights in Koh Phangan and got a little bored, the other involved a boat trip back by a little fishing boat at 8am after partying all night, resulting in us being totally drenched. There were better boats but we didn't want to wait so long. Made some good memorable moments though!

Enjoy your time there

As above, if you want to party it's deffo Chaweng.

We went to the FM party a few weeks ago. We booked the speedboat over for 700b. They picked us up from our guesthouse, took us over, then returned us. There are two companies that do this trip (most guesthouses will sell tickets). The boat takes about 20 mins to get across and we had the choice of a 2am or 7am return trip (although the other company did more return trips I think). The alternative is getting the regular ferry across and back, but you might struggle getting on as they are usually packed. Plus, with transport costs to the pier you're not really saving much over the speedboat.

Hi,

From the places I stayed on Koh Samui you have a choice of two real contrasting beaches. The first is Lamai Beach which is fairly quiet and chilled out, a beautiful spot to chill out and has a nice range of little beach front hotels. The other Is Chaweng Beach which is more built up, lots of bars and a busy night life. The two are really not that far away from each other, about a 10/15 minute taxi ride.

The island is not that big so getting to and from the ferry port from either of these beaches is easy.

Hope this helps
Have fun!

I recently spent my honneymoon in koh Samui. I think Chaweng beach and Bophut are ok places to stay. If you need a specific hotel name I can reccomend Amari Palm Reef. the hotel is a little overpriced but you will get served decently.I also reccomend you to see koh tao and koh nan yuang if you have time and water camera :)

I second Chaweng, there's lots of activity all within walking distance. I stayed at akyra samui, very cute lovely place. Many places to drink and eat along the beach, great location as well. If you have a couple days, the resort can even arrange tours for you
