Hey there,

While I was planning a road trip in USA I figured out that car rental companies charge Turkish customers the double price they charge to US citizens.

For example if a US citizen pays 500 for the car, we should pay 1000 usd for it. Even when we make prepayments and eraly bookings it doesnt change they still charge us with double price.

Is this only happening to Turks and middle easterns or lets say every non-christian country's citizens oranyone else who are not Us citizens?

Special price for you my friend
No seriously, how do you know this information?

Maybe it has something to do with needing to pay for extra insurance for foreigners in general, though the price should not be twice as high. And it surely has nothing to do with religion, politics or race, that's a rather paranoid reaction.

Now, there are huge difference throughout the internet regarding the options of renting a car. i even found that with the same company price differences can be up to 50% by using their different country websites: for example the UK version, or the Europe version, instead of the USA version. Really, that beats me too.

Also, I remember something about US citizens not able to rent cars in their own country. Someone nows about that?

The OP gives no specific information - what company, what city, what dates, age of renter? One thing private companies cannot do in this country is discriminate - the law is very specific.

you can simply check my statement by clicking on avis usa or avis international. you will see that they charge turks 3 times more than they charge australians. this is really insulting.

Relax man, this happens to Dutch people as well. There is probably some economic explanation for it which has nothing to do with being Turkish, Dutch, Australian or whatever nationality.

Saw a 'tick' box asking if I was a "Resident of United States (USA)" and the drop down box showed that Turks are charged significantly less than Americans. Also checked against Iraqi and Cubans and both were less than Americans, so maybe the extra charge was more to do with age of driver, different drop-off point, etc? Only the OP will know.

For the record - checked Avis Uk and it doesn't ask about nationality.

edit: Russians, Afghani's and Chinese are charged a little more than Americans. Maybe it's to do with insurance - accident rate in particular countries? - anyone's guess really.

I konw maybe I overreacted but it is getting worse every second here are the prices from avis:
(13 days in july 2010 with the base rate at los angeles airport)

for citizens of turkey 1155 usd

for australians :542 usd

for us citizens 485 usd

for frenchs 370 euros ( that makes sth like 550 usd)

I even double checked the price and converted 1155 TRY to dollar incase if they misused dollars symbol for TRY symbol it is still sth around 650 usd and overpriced.

This really doesn't sound right to be honest. Normally additional charges are down to insurances or extra options, like sat nav, special seats etc.......

On a side note, why are you checking avis ? it is one of the more expensive car rental companies.......... (I should know, I used to work for their biggest competitor in the same price category)........

have you tried any of the price comparison sites? there are really a lot of choices & offers, with a quick google search you can find lots of them.......

http://www.comparecarrentals.com/
http://www.vroomvroomvroom.com/
http://www.travelsupermarket.com/c/cheap-car-hire/

If one rental company is annoying you with price changes which can also occur because of special offers expiring etc then why only look at that one?

Why avis? because the last time when we rented cars in usa we choosed Budget. And they did those things that you mentioned. When you book online they hide most of the taxes insurances etc. so this time I decided to rent from some other company...
