Hi,
I'm hopefully going to Australia for a year at the beginning of 2011, and having bought a rucksack already (one that opens kind of like a suitcase), I was wondering what other people have used to pack things in as I want to be able to find things easily once I'm there by keeping things in separate bags.
Is it worth buying packing cubes to separate things? And can you get waterproof ones? Or should I get a waterproof liner for my rucksack? I've also seen stuff sacks on camping websites which look good for compressing things... are they any good?
Any tips would be appreciated as I've only ever used a massive suitcase for going away in the past!

I use one of the Eagle Creek Pack-It Folders for my shirts, and I think it saves time when repacking constantly. I do take a stuff sack too for emergencies, laundry or just when I need an extra bag. My next trip out, I'm taking a few waterproof bags for a boat trip. I live near an REI store here in Oregon - you should see all the neat gear for the modern backpacker.

My secret is to travel as light as possible - it's very tempting to take too much.

I use a few very light stuff sacks of different colours. Great for just pulling everything out then stuffing back what I don't need into my rucksack. Not waterproof, but then it's not like I'm walking in the rain for hours. Resistant enough though to hang up in a hostel shower with my passport, money and other valuables. They make pretty good pillows too.
