Travel Forums Europe Move to France

It is my great desire to move to France. I have lived in the USA my entire life, and now I am able to leave -- nothing holding me back, except I do have 4 cats, that I could never part with.

As much as I would love to live in Paris, it is my understanding that it is one of the most expensive cities in Europe, and in the world. A small or medium sized city would probably suit me perfectly. I am interested in the Languedoc-Roussillon region.

I'm just starting this journey, and since I have never travelled abroad, I am aware that I have a lot to learn. How would I find a place to rent in the region that I mentioned above -- could I find accommodations between $600/$800 a month? Does France allow animals? Are there any known expats that I could correspond with? I know that I have to get in contact with the French Embassy, which can be downloaded.

I need to start now, as I would like to leave the US in May of 2011. Any suggestions, or help would be greatly appreciated. I am also part French heritage, and I would like to do some historical research on my grandmother's family. Perhaps most importantly, I have become a bit weary of life in the US and realize there is a big world out there waiting to be explored. It is definitely time for a change, and this is something I've dreamed about for many years.

Thanks for any hep that you can provide for me, it is greatly appreciated.

You might want to join up here Ex Pat Forum They have good answers for what you are looking for. Well done on your decision to get out of the US for a while. It can definitely be a bit of a mind numbing place. Fox news, and CNN have a lot to answer for! But that unfortunately seems to have become the mentality of the US these days.

Thanks for giving me the information on the post. I definitely will go on it today and start to learn as much as I can.

I think you read my mind regarding Fox and CNN. I wanted to be careful how I phrased it, but, I've got to get out of America -- I'm sick of it beyond words. There are things afoot that I'm finding difficult to cope with, maybe even frightening. The late comic, George Carlin, pretty well nailed it with amazing accuracy, and I agree with what he said.

Again, thanks,

A friend of mine moved to Paris (from New Zealand), and sent for her cat a few months later. Not sure of any details, but the cat is here and well! I think it was quite pricey though...

So not much help except to say it can be done!

I'm not sure if you've decided on L-R yet or not, but I live here and have gone through the process you are about to embark on with the French embassy. I'm also North American, which is FAR different from being a EU citizen, in terms of your right to live here. If you have any questions, just ask.
