Hi there,
the new layout looks good to me and most stuff seems to work fine.

The only thing I have difficulties currently, is the photo-upload.
Regardless if I try multiple with the applet, with gives a trail-version message, or if I use the single file upload.
In both cases the upload itself seems to work ok, but after that in the gallery the photo is empty.
Means there is an entry for this pic, but it is empty.

May be you have time to have a look what going wrong,
Thanks

Secondly, on a forum page looking at the list of threads it would probably be easier on the eye if the background colour alternated.

I think bringing back alternating row colours is probably not a bad idea. We had it at one stage, then ditched it, so will have to have a closer look at the 'why' again, but I do agree in general.

Finally, it's a little confusing that the drop-down for Control Panel in top-right drops down automatically on mouseover, yet the drop-down for Travel Guide in the main menu doesn't - and this is further confused because you need to click the arrow next to Travel Guide to make that menu drop, as if you click on Travel Guide it takes you to the travel guide without the drop-down menu (which I would expect to see drop either on mouseover (preferably for me) or mouseclick because of the arrow).

He, a typical case of Peter did one and I did the other. Peter actually mentioned this later too. We'll see if we can't get this standardized a little more. I think it's logical for clicking on Travel Guide to take you to the main page there though. I know some people probably have some strong opinions about hovering over that one bringing up the sub nav though...

Sorry - something else I noticed by playing. If you click on Share on the top-right, it's very difficult to get rid of it if you're not going to use it (maybe you're just having a look to see the options available or something). You either have to click Share again (which is almost entirely hidden by the "Share the Love" box that appears) or navigate to another page. Clicking anywhere else on the page doesn't get rid of that box.

I get the same, but we put it down to just being me, as Peter doesn't have this happen to him. Clearly it's supposed to close when clicking outside the box AND not supposed to hide the Close link at the top either (that's an IE specific bug that needs tracking down).

Something that I've found useful looking for potentially suspicious posts on the forums is the "Last Post" column on the thread lists, in addition to the "Started By". There are some things that can suggest a potentially suspicious post (or thread) such as the username of the latest poster, and if there has been just 1 reply and it's by the same user, or another first-time poster.

It was a conscious decision to drop this due to space. The information is still there, but requires a hover over the Last Post link.

I thought I would let you know that I noticed a bug. I was trying to unsubscribe from a thread and it wouldn't let me. The link kept saying 'unsubscribe,' as if I hadn't. I went to my subscritions and 'manually' did it, and it worked, but not with the link ..

Weird, is this when you click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of a thread? It works for me... was there a particular thread you were trying to unsubscribe from? Will have to look at this one a little closer :)

Other than that, please keep any bug reports and suggestions coming!! We will continue to tinker at it till we are all happy (within some kind of reason of course ).

While I'm at it, thought I'd point out the biggest changes other than the new look:

  • the maps have been swapped out for Google. You should notice this especially when viewing the site on an iphone, but also when mapping photos as we now use Google's database which is a little larger than the 2 million or so records we had and multilingual to boot. A whole bunch of other changes have also been made here to hopefully make the mapping easier, faster and infinitely cooler. You can also create a trip map without being a member and share it.
  • blogs area has gotten a couple of much requested features including reverse ordering, free form categorization and the ability to password protect your blog. The diaries are going to be ditched in the not too far future, so if you have one, this would be the time to convert it to a blog...
  • the home page now leads in with a relevant featured wiki guide based on a calendar of events. We'll be taking all suggestions for cool events around the world to add to this. I kind of like the idea of having small local events featured every now and then too, if we have a decent guide we can feature alongside.
  • a much improved search system, although if I'm mistaken the updates still need to be run on that!
  • the message centre got a solid makeover with folders and the ability to add images etc.
  • we've changed how the travel helper system works to match it with the wiki. All existing travel helpers have been converted over to the respective travel guides, ie. if you were a helper for Australia, you still are. The main benefit of this is that you can now choose to be a travel helper for Melbourne instead of the whole of Australia. Likewise, when posting in the forum, you can now choose these more targetted wiki guides to alert the travel helpers for those specific guides. For example a thread like this one about Barcelona could now be set to notify the Barcelona Travel Helpers. Doing this also brings in the relevant guide, which will be helpful for other readers we hope.
  • the photography area got a bunch of smaller changes, and the main page especially looks cool with 60 or so featured images highlighted.
  • the right nav on the forums will also start showing relevant threads about similar topics using the ultra new search system. But as per above, don't think the search indexes have been updated yet

Right, that's the main ones!

Another comment: I think that the font size is fine on my PC. Maybe it will just take a bit of getting used to . . . Although, for older people it may be too small- I'm only almost 27.

Agree about the word 'Travellerspoint': nice job!

The thread in particular which I was trying to unsubscribe from was called "How are the Metro Stations in Paris" and the link is http://www.travellerspoint.com/forum.cfm?thread=60716

Sorry I didn't post that earlier. For some reason I skipped over the last post when I clicked on the link in my email.

I'm sorry to say that I'm not enthusiastic about the new design. The standard font seems to be smaller than it was before, and all the white is giving me a headache. It looks very cheap and empty, somehow. Also, for me it doesn't make sense to have the controls (links etc.) in the right pane instead of the left.

Hmm... I tried. No problems in subscribing/unsubscribing the Paris thread. Can you try it again, Steph?

I'm sorry to say that I'm not enthusiastic about the new design. The standard font seems to be smaller than it was before, and all the white is giving me a headache. It looks very cheap and empty, somehow.

In the previous design, the main font for the content was Lucida Grande at the size of 11px. An alternative/replacement font, Verdana, was specified in case the computer do not have this font. Since Lucida Grande is only available on Macs but not in Windows, Windows machines will automatically display it in Verdana. But for Mac machines, it has always been Lucida Grande.

In the new design, the main font for the content is still Lucida Grande. While trying to get both the Macs and Windows machines to display things as closely as possible, I suggested that Lucida Sans Unicode be used as the alternative font replacing Verdana, just so that both Macs and Windows will have very similar looks. However, at the size of 11px, Lucida Sans Unicode (Windows) is slightly smaller than Lucida Grande (Macs). Having got used to the Lucida family fonts, we tested it out and thought that it looked fine. It is not possible to have an "alternative size" for font without non-conventional messing up with the codes. But Peter is looking into that, with a possibility of reverting back to Verdana, if the new style is really a problem for the majority of people.

Also, for me it doesn't make sense to have the controls (links etc.) in the right pane instead of the left.

There's no right or wrong in putting control links on the left or on the right. It's mainly due to the trend. Based on my observation, current trends of web designs tend to have the main content area on the left, with the right reserved for other stuff. Main navigation tend to move to the top banner. Just go to some of the major news sites and you'll see most of them have similar styles - content on the left or towards the left. The BBC News site has just been redesigned recently and they, too, have adopted the same style. Compare this recent article and this older article.

I know, pane structure is a matter of taste. The current trend is not what I consider a useful layout, but I'll try to adapt :)
