If you're only on a short trip I wouldn't bother carrying your own laptop/netbook with you. However, for me there is no alternative for having my own laptop on longer travels. Not only offer a lot of hostels and e.g. McDonalds internet for free, so that I can check my emails, upload my pictures and do online banking without having to worry more than usual about security. And as a passionate photographer the most important feature of having my laptop with me is the possibility to mirror and/or store my pics on the hard drive and not keeping it all on a small and tiny memory card...
Sorry it has been a while, but I decided to write a blog post on the measures I have taken to protect a laptop whilst travelling, should you decide to take it.
Six months ago i put a modem with internet access in my apartment -snip- because whilst not many apartment owners that i know of offer this, i feel that it is important that all guests enjoy their holiday and why should that mean trips to internet cafés?
Many guests work on holiday but for those that do not, it can be fun for internet use to share a holiday whilst it is actually happening. We are in 2011 almost and there is no excuse not to provide a modem, other than the cost of course... but if it means happy guests then it´s a small price to pay in my opinion.
I am not against internet cafés, they are very useful but i would rather my holiday apartment had internet, i can´t live without facebook for long these days!!!
