I am going to travel to Australia in Summer (Middle Jan to Middle Feb). The excuse is an English course that lasts two weeks but I'm staying there for four. I'm still not sure which place to choose.
I'm going to be 17 (I'll turn 18 that March), I'm a girl.
I would like to meet people and make friends, mainly australians (That's because I would like to have an australian experience and not the turist-like one). I want to be near good beaches (where I can go walking). And a place that has great nightlife. Nevertheless I need safety. I'll be just 17 after all.
Please don't just say Melbourne or Sydney, please say why. And if you can where should I stay, more that one option is okay too.. (e.g. Melbourne -CBD and why)

If it's possible can you please let me know what activities can I make to meet people? I don't wanna spend the month alone!

Scratch Both and go to Brisbane.

It terms of climate, sure Sydney is nice and Melbourne works too, but Brisbane tops them both.

Lifestyle-wise, I personally feel that Queensland takes the cake. Plus there is so much to do outdoors. If you got a chance to see National Geographic's TV series about the "Best Job in the World" you would have to agree. Such great footage...really inspiring.

I might agree with you in winter, but surely not in January/February! I was there for four days that time of the year, visiting friends, and the humidity drove me crazy.

My favorite neighbourhood to stay for a month would have to be Sydney's Glebe; it's right next to the university, and has a wonderful (almost bohemian) vibe quite of its own, but it still conveniently close to the CBD (only 10 minutes away). I actually had random strangers greet me as I was walking down the street, and fun conversations in the many cafes, restaurants, bakeries and used bookstores which line Glebe Point Road. It's not really close to beaches (though they're within easy reach by public transport), but then, beaches in Sydney aren't really for walking along anyway - they're all tiny.
Melbourne is a pretty decent city as well, and would be my second choice, although January/February is about the only time of the year where the city has any negative things to say about it, due to the masses of big flies which zoom about annoyingly. The area of Fitzroy/Carlton/Brunswick is a bit reminiscent of Glebe, if not as leafy, and would be my recommendation for where to stay. (The beach situation there is pretty much the same as ion Glebe, though.)

I found Perth boring and wouldn't recommend it, while Cairns could be a great option if it wasn't for that time of year being the wet season.
