My wife and I have been in Australia for 8 weeks now and we've traveled quite a bit in Southern NSW, Victoria and ACT seeing all the recommended stuff such as the Southern NSW coast, Phillip Island, Melbourne, Great Ocean Road, Grampians, Canberra etc.
We've come to Manly for Christmas and New Year and have blown our budget a little by catching up with friends and partying too hard!! We've got 2 weeks to kill before we need to be in Cairns for a road trip back to Sydney down the East Coast (flights and campervan re-location booked) and want to go to Uluru. Trouble is we can't afford to do that (via plane / car / hostel or Hotel) and take our PADI for diving whilst on the reef!
What's the cheapest way of getting to 'the rock' from Sydney and where can we stay along the way that's relatively cheap? I'm not adverse to the whole organised tour thing, busses and trains are fine too but we're a little long in the tooth for hitching, staying in dorms or sharing clapped out Ford Falcons with a team of young 'uns! (Never thought I'd be saying that at the ripe ol' age of 32 )
Any helpful suggestions?
