Hey folks,

Setting out on a trip around the world. I will be encompassing Asia, Australia, NZ and South America.

I want to pick up some good equipment (pack, sleeping bag, small tent, boots etc)

What are the best brands? Does anyone know of Eagle Creek? Am I better off paying for Lowe Alpine or Berghaus? Can I buy online and would you recommend this?

Thanks,
Derek.

In the USA, I have used REI (Recreational Equipment Inc) since 1973 for hiking and backpacking needs. They sell brand names but their private label equipment meets or exceeds branded names and is more inexpensive. Based in Seattle, they started out as a mountain climbers' equipment cooperative and you have the option of membership for year-end dividend rebates. They also sell online.

I have a Snugpak 1 season 'Travelite' sleeping bag. Not too expensive (£40) nice silky material and a built in mozzy net, though I haven't had the need to use it really. Weighs about 650 grams and compresses really small, and I mean really small. Should suit the places you're going.

Packs, tents and boots are all a bit more personal really. Not sure that you'd need a tent actually. Depends what you're planning I suppose. Good luck.

Just checked out some of their stuff and honestly thought some of it was a little on the heavy side. A 'carry-on', for instance, that weighs over 3.5 kilos just doesn't make sense imo, though the bigger bags seem a little better in proportion. Just shop around though. See what feels right.
