How does it feel you you?
The big cheese at The Vatican reckons that stepping off the plane at Heathrow, feels like arriving in a third world country.

Very interesting thread; I didn't know he had said this. I landed at Heathrow (terminal 3 I think) last year on an incoming flight from Seoul, and I described it to everyone afterwards as 'like arriving in a third world country'! There were floor tiles lying about, loose wires everywhere and it looked like something out of the 1970s. The place was a total mess (and a health and safety hazard I'm sure) and in complete contrast to the modern, pristine Incheon airport in Seoul that I had just left. I don't mean this to be derogatory to third world countries; in fact most of the airports I have been to in those countries were better than what I saw at Heathrow that day.

To add to my dissatisfaction, the transport between the terminals was so slow and disorganised that I missed my connecting flight up to Manchester, in spite of having around 2 hours between flights.

I haven't been too impressed with Heathrow either both times that I landed there - once four years ago, and then earlier this month. It just felt pretty user-unfriendly and unwelcoming - not necessarily traits of "third-world countries", but definitely won't make my list of favourite airports.

Two great openers.
I use LHR only when it dictates I should. Realistically, I have arrived at airports that have been described as being in third world countries which, if little else, at least try harder to help and offer some sort of service as best they can.
My honest feeling when arriving at LHR?.... A total mess a lot of the time. Terrible record of take-off and landing time reliability. Pretty useless rail links, but third world? Perhaps it warrants the description for the millions it makes each month - yet really doesnt pride itself so much.

Beautiful, but terribly inneficient - and a laugh (or cry ! !), compared to Schiphol and Dubai.
