Well if off the beaten path is what you really enjoy the countries you'll find Japan, Vietnam and most of Thailand to be a bit tame (though there are some wonderful off the beaten path spots), Cambodia has some for sure, but you can't beat Mongolia, Myanmar, Bhutan and Malaysia for the pure adventures you can find there.

If it were me I'd go to Myanmar, Mongolia and Bhutan - while they are still mostly off the main tourist track. The Philippines is a good choice too.

Hi Travellers!

I used this forum last time I planned my Europe backpacking adventure, so I thought I'd come back to the experts for my next trip!

My boyfriend and I are planning a three week trip over Christmas/New Years. We're definitely visiting the Philippines (he has family there) but would like to visit a second country that is nearby.

I'd love your advice on what second country we should choose! Where have you travelled that you would love to return to? Perhaps Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia?

Just some background - we're not the clubbing/city type. Things 'off the beaten track' excite us and we'd love to see some natural wonders, beaches, historic wonders, villages, have local and intrepid experiences, etc.

Any recommendations (cities/towns, things to see, where to stay, etc) would also be much appreciated!

Thailand for sure - hands down!

Easy answer: China, China & China.

The oldest continued civilization, with the greatest culture in the world, the best food, friendliest people,
more UNESCO World Heritage sights than you could shake a stick at, and the most important country in the
world today. There's just so much to do/learn about in probably the most fascinating country on earth.
I'm Canadian, and have lived here for 7 years, and I am not planning on leaving China.

Runners Up: India, Vietnam, North Korea (seriously unbelievable experience), Malaysia, Thailand.
