I'm also going to be travelling around South America for a few months early next year, aiming to be in Rio for carnival. It does indeed seem horrendously expensive, but hopefully it will be worth it. Clare or anyone else - I'm not too far from London if you wanted to meet up and discuss plans...

Hey Allan,

Where abouts are you from? Any ideas on what countries you want to go to yet?

I'm from just south of London. My plan is to get to see as much of South America as possible (perhaps a full loop clockwise, including Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Columbia, Venezuela!).

Hi Clare and Leonie,
I am a 32 yr old female and will be travelling alone to Sth America from the 1st March - 8th June 2011. I am going to Rio for Carnival first. I have not booked accommo in Rio yet but going to do asap. I am going to look into some hostels but El Misti booked by Dave sounds like an option!
Would be great to meet up with you both/arrange to stay in the same hostel so that we're not going it alone!

Hey Allan,

That sounds like a lot of countries for a few months, you may struggle to get through all that!

I have booked the El Misti Hostel ( Botafoga one I think its called), I am staying there for 11 nights and that has cost just over £400. Through this website I have found at least 5 other young female travellers who have all booked the same hostel and so we all know we wont be on our own!!!

Let me know if you manage to get a bed booked, it was pretty near to fully booked when I booked it last weekend.

Leonie x

I guess two are best for such journeys.

Quick question for those that booked El Misti for carnival time. I booked through Hostelworld where I paid 10% of the total and was told the remainder would be due on arrival. Shortly after, I received an email from El Misti (from a different address to that stated on the website) informing me I would need to pay a further 40% now. Did anyone else receive that email?

I have emailed El Misti to check the payment request was legitimate but not received a response.

Yeh I did the same. Booked through hostel world, got the email and then bank transferred the rest of the money.
