I think there is only one El Misti from what I can see! It's in Botafogo but it's near the Copacaban.

Nah, there's two...i'm in the copacabana one.

I have found three!

There is the Botafogo one (all the girls seemed to have booked that one and it is booked out :( )

There is El Misti Hostel in Copacabana

and a new one named El Misti House in Copacabana but its a different one to the other one in Copacabana!

So it looks like I am booking the El misti hostel in Copacabana :)

Alternatively you could hang out in Leblon and Ipanema - I've decided to stay in the Lemon Spirit hostel in Leblon, which supposed to be pretty good.

I'm also heading to Rio on March 1st for carnival then spending the next 6 months working my way to Mexico in a clockwise loop of the two continets. If anyone fancies meeting up in Rio please message me.

Also what seems to eb the most popular hostel for everyone to stay in (that still has some room!)? I'd really like to stay somewhere that i know other sociable people are likely to be!

Hey Claire :)

I booked and so have three other people now I know. I am in the 6 bed room :) I looked at hostels for ages and this is really nice and central and looks really good! I would recommend booking asap though whatever you decide to do because they are booking up quickly. This one is also reasonably priced - lots of them have bumped the price up to $120 for a 2 or 3 week period where as this one is normal rates besides that one week that carnival runs for so you aren't paying a fortune for staying a few days either side!

You can also email them they are really helpful and speak perfect english. They do a carnival package which includes airport pick up and costumes etc directly through their website which actually works out to be cheaper too.

My fb is Kiah perkins if you want to add me.

Hi Kiah,

I sent them an email and they quoted their carnival package as being a little bit more than some of the other hostels that I've looked. Might be worth emailing them to see if you have to pay the remaining balance when you get there, I've read a few horror stories like that on other forums. people think they've got a pretty good deal then have been charged a lot more when they get to the hostel.

Let me know if you want to meet up when we're in Rio, would be good to meet up with a group of people.
