This is sort of a specialty question, for sure, but has anybody here traveled in China around during Christmas time? What sort of experiences did you have, and does anybody there really celebrate it? (I understand it's a Taoist/Buddhist country but we celebrate Chinese New Year in the USA so I'm wondering if that goes both ways?)
I'll be in Southwest China (not sure exactly where yet) for December and January and I'm debating if I should fly to Singapore to be with relatives for Christmas... but if there the Chinese celebrate the holiday (even to a minor extent) it might be kind of fun to experience it that way! I'm definitely curious about Chinese Christmas
Share your experiences! Thanks
If, by "celebrate", you mean have giant Christmas trees and inflatable santas in every department store then yes, they "celebrate it." But it's not a holiday: schools and businesses are still open, except in Hong Kong. Well, not this year- Christmas is on a Saturday, I think. Many Chinese go out for dinner that night (good luck finding a table in a restaurant Christmas night!) But that's all. Few Chinese I've talked to realize it's a Christian holiday, celebrating Jesus' birth. To them, it's just another excuse for a party.
Go to Singapore. Celebrate with family. You're not missing anything.
But come back for Chinese New Year's! Now THAT's a celebration!

Hi, China already has been a open country, in the big or middle city of southwest China, it is sure for you to easily find that many western people spend their Christmas in hotel, pub downtown even in the macdonald. it is wonderful and crazy.
You can trust me to try your first christmas in China.
Any other questions about travel in China , please send message to me , I would like to give you help.
i doubt if u'd enjoy a christmas in southwest china, cuz they are not big and int'l cities, like shanghai. some of the places there are kinda rural and not yet economically well developed, people are traditional and lead a simple life. to enjoy some sort of x'mas celebrations in china, u need to go to big cities. we have big celebrations during x;mas in HK, so u may want to spend x'mas here instead.
