im thinking of volunteering at the womens crisis centre in cambodia, i was just wondering if anyone else had done this before, and how safe is it to do? Thank you

that sounds like an extremely good idea. I have not done that (being a man I don't qualify), but I think Cambodian women appreciate the work that the NGOs catering for women do.

Safe? Yes - but...

Cambodia is a fairly safe country these days. However some Cambodian men will not be able to understand the western approach to women's rights. They still regard it as their right to beat women if they don't perform, hence the need for institutions where women can find shelter. If these men feel humiliated by westerners who (in their eyes) act against Khmer traditions by depriving the husband of his right to beat his wife, they might focus their anger on the volunteer.

But it is not only domestic violence that has to be dealt with, there is also the issue of forced prostitution and women affected by the sex trade also need assistance.

I would still encourage you to take up that job, just take the usual precautions if you have handled a sensitive case.

Good luck!

I don't know how safe it is, but have a friend in PP that will. I will send you her e-mail in a PM.
