Anyone know of any really funky / different / friendly / kitch kind of hotels in San Fran?

Dunno if I'm looking at all the wrong websites, but all the hotels i've been checking out look really old and staid (and that's not the impression I had of San Fran!)

Thank you!

Yeah, you must be at the wrong websites.

There are lots of high-end hotels, like the Marriotts and Sheratons and Hiltons and upscale places like the Fairmont and Mark Hopkins.

However, for kitch--try the Joie de Vivre group--http://www.jdvhotels.com/.

All the rock groups stay at the Phoenix Hotel from this group's offerings--while others like the Archbishop's Palace and the seniors like the Laurel Inn.

P.S. I went to the main Phoenix hotel's website, which claims that Keanu Reeves, Joan Jett, Vincent Gallo, Little Richard Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Psychedelic Furs, Pearl Jam,The Killers, Bloc Party and The Shins have all stayed at the hotel.

Oh, and when the rockers aren't sleeping or partying during the day at the pool, you can find them nearby at Hemlock or the Castle or Whisky Thieves kicking back drinks.

Kimpton Hotels are also pretty now! In my opinion, San Francisco is the place to book a B&B. The big nationwide chains are mainly business hotels.

I suggest you talk to a SF resident before you book, as location is quite important in this town. There are several fairly nice hotels in the worst of neighborhoods that you will probably want to avoid. For instance, The SF Hilton borders the Tenderloin - you will want to avoid that area!

Union square and Fisherman’s wharf have the best hotels (boutique and B&B's) in SF area. Downtown has some expensive hotels but they are surely worth their price. I would advise you to stay and spend at least a Friday or a Saturday night in the hotels. They are generally crowded with tourists around the world with some band/ artist performing there. I don’t know your budget but on an average you will get a room at $200 most probably.
