If you are alone then i think you should go with the help of some travel agency.Travel agents organises trips that are reasonable and you can easily get company there..

Quoting hanis

I suggest to avoid: day trips to Phi Phi and James bond island, a trap for tourists.

sorry, may i know why you are suggesting to avoid day trips to phi phi island ??

Hi Hanis,
about JAMES BOND island, the popular limestone in the Phang Nga bay which became famous for a james Bond movie, it's very disappointing, as many boats will get there and you will only pass by to see... a limestone... in the sea, like there are many in the Phang Nga bay. And the place will be full of boats, you must be lucky to make even a picture without a boat around.

The whole Phang Nga bay instead is absolutely amazing, best island ever is Koh Phanak. In Koh Phanak you have to get off the boat and visit its caves and hidden lagoons, a micro cosmos inside a macro cosmos. Not every company arrange visits to Koh Phanak properly as the access is not easy, I've found my way by sailing boat and by a dinghy.
Koh Hong is also a very popular and nice destination, specially by sea-canoe as it has a hidden lagoon inside reachable only when the tide is low. Much more worth it to visit are Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai in the Phang Nga (KOH in Thai means Island, so when ot comes to a Koh you are going to an island).

About PHI PHI, which could really be a true paradise, it is literally attacked by boats everyday, carrying thousands of people.
The easiest way to get there is by speedboat, which carry about 40-50 persons each (even if they couldn't for safety reasons). You will spend more than a hour bumping on the boat without the possibility of movement and once there you will have to follow a tigh schedule of activities on each place you visit: 30 min on maya bay, 1 hour on monkey beach, 20 minutes feeding fish and snorkeling (this is the most DON'T DO activity, as fishes shouldn't be fed by bread, totally unnatural), and you have to be careful do not lose your group, very stressful day. And all those people for sure don't help the ecosystem to stay alive. Still, hundreds of boats everywhere...
I suggest to live Phi Phi for a couple of days at least, get there by ferry and stay a couple of nights, enjoy the sea on the main island till 2-3 pm, than have a sunset cruise and visit all major places when most of boats are leaving to go back to Phuket, Krabi or Koh Lanta. Or have a tour it in the early morning from 7 to 10. From Phi Phi ypu can also get to Bamboo island, Mosquito island and Chicken island, as an island hopping activity.

If you guys want to see real paradise, I suggest you to go to the southern part of Thailand and check out the Koh Tarutao Marine National park, you can sleep on Koh Lipe for a couple of days.

Or you can go to Khao Lak, in the Phang Nga province. From there you have many choices:
- visit the Khao Sok national park and sleep on the Chaom Lam Lake huts, amazing experience in the middle of nature.
- have a tour to Similan and Surin islands. This is not cheap, but you can join a diving center boat as non diver to get there. Or have asnorkeling speedboat tour.

Starting from Bangkok, I will go to Ayutthaya, Sukkothai, Chiang Mai, Pai, Mae Hong Sot; than go to the south for beach destinations, Khao Lak, Similan and Surin, Khao Sok, Phang Nga bay, both Koh Yao, krabi and dulcis in fundo, koh Tarutao.

Enjoy your plans!

Thailand is a good place to travel.
Better not going alone. People will be friendly and food is delicious.

i'm a 24-year-old girl thinking of going to Thailand in Feb 2011 too - none of my friends are free to join me though...

Thinking of sticking to mostly Thailand and doing the whole country pretty thoroughly for 3-4 weeks (if that's enough time), with maybe a quick trip to cambodia. Would love a travel buddy! Message me if you're interested in joining me. Im still in the planning stages...
