when traveling before you go you should have a plan first, expect those things that you are going to use and you should also bring a map or a compass.Always ensure that safety googlers meet standards.

I never travel without a camera and laptop..........

As for me, those 5 things would have to be:

1. PSP
2. Ipod
3. DSLR
4. Wrist watch
5. Jacket

5things i cant go without is

1.wallet (including atm and extra cash-convert your dollar to locAL currency)
2.ipod (music helps especially for long travels)
3.cellular phone (always comes in handy)
4.map (for your own knowledge about the destination)
5.backpack(bring the things that u find necessary)

Also a digital camera and an LP Guide Book (or other).
I also like to pack or buy right away a phrasebook and some sort of children's litterature in the spoken language - that's usually a fun and easy way to learn the basics.

And of course an open heart and lots and lots of curiosity
