Money. Clothes. Hygiene stuff. Cellphone. and uh... I don't know what else. I'm torn between my camera and my iPod.

Not much to add, except that we always take a multi-plug power board when we go to another country. That way we only need one 'foreign' plug, provided we don't overload our power board.
It's really useful for charging camera and iPhones at the same time, and/or using the Notebook.

My other necessity is a small dacron pillow. Some hotels provide dreadful, hard pillows, and when I think of the sandbags they gave us for pillows in the Sahara in Morocco, I'm glad I was a sissy and took my own along!

In my opinion you have to be a very brave traveller to bring your laptop with you. I am almost reluctant to bring my iPhone with me to europe this summer. If you do bring posessions such as this never and I mean NEVER take your eye off your things.

Words of wisdom from somebody who has been pickpocketed twice and had a suitcase stolen from above my head on a train when I dozed off.

To offset what omgcrayons said: I've been travelling with laptop (and expensive DSLR) constantly since 2003 (~3 years on the road, total). As with all valuable possessions, you have to use common sense - don't flaunt it, keep an eye on it. But beyond that: The laptop is a tool, and can be replaced. If you don't bring it cause you're too afraid it'll get stolen, what's the use of having it? Definitely take precautions such as encrypting the hard disk so your information is safe, and have good travel insurance, but don't worry about it beyond that.

Only 5 things!!
5 things would be the absolute minimum:

1. Passport
2. Money
3. Credit Card
4. Shoes
5. Clothes I am wearing
--
With these 5 items I can handle just about any situation I was in, anywhere in the world.

Missing just one of these items will make a situation more difficult.

Cheers,
Phil
