Definitely my Kindle. One of the best inventions ever, since I always read quite a lot, which saves me bringing/buying about 5 books in a 2 week holiday :). Other than that I never leave without a medicine kit and some 'emergency' stuff.

I suppose another way of looking at it would be, the loss of which 5 things would you miss most if you had everything stolen whilst travelling !!

1. Passport
2. Money, credit card
3. Laptop
4. Camera
5. A change of clothes

But, to answer the original question, the standard passport and money -

1. Swiss army knife - even if you only use the knife to cut bread !
2. A bungee chord (not for jumping of bridges, the ones with hooks at each end) - very useful for drying clothes etc.
3. Head torch - not just for avid mountaineers - great for power cuts.
4. A decent pair of trousers with zip pockets.
5. A neck warmer.

1. swiss utility knife (small-ish, with a multitude of tools)
2. camera
3. anti-diarrhea pills
4. lamp (any kind of light, small enough to fit a pocket)
5. astro-foil

1. iPhone/iPad
2. iPod
3. Novels
4. Money
5. Clothes

I'm pretty big on entertainment.

1. Leatherman
2. First aid kit
3. Headlamp
4. Duct tape
5. My trusty Columbia covertible cargo pants. Those babies have been with me through 30+ countries over 13 years now :)

1) passport/tickets/id
2) money
3) smart phone to check travel and hotel deals -snip-
4) reading material
5) a pen/pencil

have to add in one last one...a smile and positive attitude! Travel is fun :)
