I'm looking to leave the UK (where i live) in February to travel across south east asia for around 4 months. I would really like a travel companion at least for the first part of my trip. I'm quite nervous about going as i'm just 18 and going alone! it would be nice to have someone when i first arrive thailand to chill with. Let me know if anyone is heading there around this time! My plan isn't definite so i'm flexible on destinations and times.
Basically if you are heading to Thailand first, you will have no trouble in meeting up with people. Normally younger travelers head for Khao San Rad in Bangkok.
Loads of cheap hotels beer and both good and bad advice.
Essentially Thailand is a soft destination and a good entry point for S.E. Asia.
Remember to bring your brain with you - some tourists seem to forget to pack theirs.
Just like at home, you need to beware of "extra friendly or helpful people both local and foreign - there's no such thing as a "free lunch".
don't wave your belongings around (however humble).
Seek advice off more than one person.
Change you money when you get here - you get a better rate and BRING A MOBILE PHONE - or buy one here - and get a local SIM card. That way you can easily and regularly keep in touch with home.
Thanks! how much spending money would you say i needed aswell? is it unrealistic to only need £500 a month?
Asia travel is really good and fantastic experience. Cheap travel with nice views. Even I’m travelling in Europe now, I still can't forget the Asia Experience. I've been in Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines. Cultural and adventure in the place is really priceless!
Hey fellow Munro. Ha. I'm heading out to Bangkok on 5th Jan, and am around for a few months. I think my plan will be to head north from Bangkok towards Chang Mai and do the Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia loop before heading South for some beach time. I don't know how likely it is that this fits with your plan, but I may be around Bangkok when you arrive? If you were planning on heading South first then you're more than welcome to join! Let me know!
Honestly though, don't worry about going backpacking solo! It's natural to, but you'll soon realise you'll have the best time, and from what I've heard South East Asia is swarming with backpackers!
