I am also heading out to south america in March, Rio de Janeiro on the 1st of March to be exact, and am travelling on my own. This is the first bit of major travelling I've done and I am very nervous, I'd really like to find someone to meet up with before I get out there perhaps, just to have a bit of company!

Hi Lorna and Jem,
I am flying out to Rio from London on the 1st March. Am also feeling little nervous and totally unprepared but am sure things will all come together over the next month (I am still trying to learn some Spanish!) and that when we get there we will be fine!

Does anyone know where they are staying when they arrive?
I am looking at hostels in Ipanema (the best beach and most central place to stay apparently) but over Carnival time they are all so expensive (unless you're willing to share a room with up to 12 people which I'm not!)

The following places look really nice BUT all require you to book a min of 7 nights due to Carnival:

Ipanema Beach House (£70 per night though!)
El Misti House
Che Lagarto Hostel
Hostel New Ipanema

Let me know where you guys have booked.

My name is Madeline. I'm 19 years old and on a gap year at the moment. I have just booked flights for Rio on the 1st March to start of my travelling around South America and New Zealand. I'm travelling solo and feeling pretty scared but it will be such an adventure, I cannot wait to go. I would love to get in touch with other people who are in the same boat.

Look forward to hearing from you

I am also heading to SA for 3 months, I will be there for the start of the carnival. I have 3 months away, I know I want to spend some time in Brazil and Argentina but my planning has got no further then that!

I am a 25 yr female from London. As with most of the posts above, would love to be in touch with people planning a similar route! Feel free to drop me a message if you fancy meeting up in Rio or something or want to discuss plans!

I fly from London on the 1st March into Rio, haven't got very much planned yet. I am hoping to stay with someone through the CouchSurfer's website, if that fails are there any good/cheap hostels/hotels that would be good to stay in for he Carnival? Add me on facebook 'Madeline Whiffen'. Probs easier to talk through chat.

Hi Clare and Madeline,

I fly from London on the 1st March and arrive in Rio on the 2nd March. I am staying at the Ipanema Beach House for the week/whilst Carnival is on. I am planning on travelling around Brazil for a month (Pantanal, Iguassu Falls, Florianapolis, Punta Del Este etc) but am totally flexible. At the beg of April I need to meet a friend in BA as we are flying up to Columbia (Cartagena) together then doing Peru, Bolivia, Amazon for a few days then Argentina. If we meet up and think we would hit it off then you are welcome to travel with me/us!

Add me as a friend on Facebook if you would like and we can chat via there and arrange to meet up either before we go or in Rio if you want. I am a 32 yr old NZ'er (sounds old I know but promise I am fun, v easy going and up for a good time/a laugh and good fun to travel with!

Rebecca. : )

I'm also flying out to Rio on March 1st to start 6months travelling around SA. It seems there are quite a lot of people keen to meet up around then, is it worth trying to arrange something for say March 2nd? (or whenever most people would find a good time) I might need a bit of help on where to meet though as I have no idea where would be easiest to find people!
