sirwhale has indicated that this thread is about Croatia

Hi

A friend and I have decided to try out a new type of adventure, well at least for us. Next summer we´d like to cycle from Zagreb to at least Split, if not further on a mountain bike. We want to take sleeping bags and a tent and basically go where we please. We have been looking at routes so that we´re not on the motorways and the main destinations are simply starting in Zagreb, passing through the Plitvice national park and then head to the coast and follow that down. The idea is to have a rough itinerary and then see where we end up, attempt to speak to the locals as we don´t speak the language and see if the send us to a nearby beaty spot. We don´t want to make it into a cycling holiday whereby every morning we just get up and cycle, we´d like to be able to stop in places and appreciate the culture and landscape too. Well take money for food etc, but the idea is to spend as little as possible.

As of yet we´ve not done much more planning and so I was wondering if anyone on here has had any experience doing something similar and could offer some tips, or maybe comment on things that we´re looking at unrealistically.

Thanks for your help

Gerry rode Nice to Prague for his holidays this year.

Previously he has crossed Australia.

Croatia is the best choice for such a bike tour!
Great idea indeed! Be carefull if you see signs with "pozor" (it means warning) because it means that there are mines in that area, they left there from the war in the early '90's.

Thanks for the replies, a friend has also suggested taking the trip into Slovenia aswel. Showing me pictures of lake Bled impressed me somewhat. Does anyone know what the extent of the mine fields are in Croatia and if there is any information with maps of their presence?
