So I'm a 27m Australian, leaving my career and off to begin traveling the world in July. I've saved up about US$10k, but that's as far as the planning has got. I've never traveled, but am not scared of experiencing something new. Please, all those sesioned travelers out there HELP. Where do I go; where do I start; and how long can I make my money last?

I've read a million handy tips for what to take, what's nice in each country, but I am after some bigger picture advice and would love some ideas on how I spend my year away from it all. I want to experience a new culture, to see amazing places, but not to blow my money to quickly.

If anyone has any suggestions, books, websites, personal experiences, please let me know.

$US10,000 will take you many places. You may care to consider heading on one place first, and rent an apartment. This usually works out best if staying at least a month. If I had $US 10,000 in my pocket I'd head to Rio ....

I'm thinking Asia (maybe south east) then Eastern Europe as I heard they are about the cheapest with the nicest things to see. Anyway, very open to suggestions or ideas on this plan and its cost.
