Good advice, as I may be having this similar plan. 30 days.
My flight ticket has already booked and touching down Hanoi on mid Feb. Kinda of ideal timing for me, since its after Tet's day. Perhaps, I prefer lesser crowd in public transport, as well as the high price during the public holidays.
My traveling experience is more in Hanoi to Sapa, and also traveling from Sapa to Laos by land route.
If you like scenic views, high lands, foggy morning, cooling temperature, and chances to interact with hill tribe people, SaPa is the choice. Of course, away from the hustle and bustle from the cities. Hanoi is bad, Saigon is worst. I meant, people are friendly, just the kind of environment.
My last trip (second time) was 6 months ago, and I stayed in SaPa for almost 12 weeks. Just relaxing and passing time. I would say the place is awesome! In this mountainous region, U still can get rm rates of US$5/rm/day/pax for short term stay. Maybe US$6 is possible for a week or so. Above all, able to hook on to free WiFi and get connected to the world online.
I have never traveled to Saigon, because I grew up from city. So it doesn't mean anything for me to travel to another city.
However, I may be interested in places in-between, like say, Hue to Dalat. I supposed there are as wonderful as SaPa.
Alternatively, I may give up and travel northwards instead. i.e. China.
