Well I'll have to admit my Western bias before I get into this, but in no particular order here's my top 5:

1 - North or West Coast Trail - Wicked hiking trip that really gets you out into the wilderness of Vancouver Island, seeing all sorts of bears and other wildlife en route

2 - Road to Hana - I'm going to count this even though it's not 'continental' ... because this trip around the island of Maui is just amazing. It's incredible how far away you can feel from other tourists considering you are in such tourist hotbed.

3 - Oregon Coast - Okay, this should really be the whole western coast, as California is absolutely incredible as well... but the ruggedness of the Oregon Coast is really what draws some of my most nostalgic moments on the continent.

4 - Yellowstone National Park - Absolutely breathtaking... No other words to describe this incredible location.

5 - Bowron Lakes - Really cool system of interconnected lakes for a great canoeing getaway... spend a week or two miles away from anyone else, getting around by the pure power of the rapids and the paddles.

Man that was difficult... so other honourable mentions include:
Driving through the maritimes
Grand Canyon National Park
Sedona, Arizona
Sequoia National Park
Kayaking through the Gulf Islands
Tofino/Sooke on Vancouver Island

Well hello everyone. My puter died and with it was this page bookmark. I haven't been here in years but got an email notifying me that someone had replied to this thread from 2010.

It's good to be back, look forward to reading the responses.

Annoying that that reply turns out to have been spam, but welcome back!

Don't think I've ever replied to this thread yet, so my favorites:
1) Canadian Rockies. Particularly Castle Mountain and Moraine Lake in Banff National Park, but really, the entire stretch.
2) Pacific Coast Highway, with a major focus on Big Sur.
3) Yosemite - particularly the northern meadows, away from the crowds.
4) The old growth rainforest immediately south of Tofino on Vancouver Island.
5) The Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.

Yeah, I know - west coast only. I do have a whole bunch of places in the midwest, south and east which I also like, but I'm a sucker for nature, and there the west just lords it over everything.

Good call on the Canadian Rockies, and the Pacific Coast Highway for that matter. When I was in college my roommate had a picture of that famous shot of Moraine Lake My dad came to visit (he lives in Vancouver, BC), saw the poster and told me he had a picture of the same spot. I took one too, funny how they never come out as good as the poster.
