Thanks, the news was a bit of a shock and something I could have done without especially since we are travelling to South Africa to see my father who is not expected to live much longer.

I was just blown away by the amount of hysterical posting that goes on other sites when it comes to this issue. It's one of the most asked questions and I wonder whether the more stringent US immigration and control rules for allowing people in, especially since the terrorism issues escalated, have given people the wrong idea. There literally are people who actually believe that as soon as your passport is scanned everything in your life rolls up the screen for the immigration people in any country, not just the US, to see.

As far as I can see, the people who do actually get pulled up and denied entry are the people who have actually done something wrong, haven't paid the the price and don't seem to realise that if they have warrants outstanding they will be flagged up.

It's a very confusing issue really and of course the authorities don't enlighten anyone. Instead they stay quiet and keep the mystique going which is very annoying and makes a person think that there is more going on in the background than there appears to be.

At Manchester (MAN) it's possible to see passport data on the screen.
It merely shows that the information in the passport is genuine. There is no additional info about anyone's history. It will - however, show if a person is wanted by certain authorities abroad (but not all) - and 'ALL' warrants issued in the UK, regardless of whether they are in force, or spent.

Not true. NONE of that info is on the Passport.

The identity on the Passport can of course be run through various databases to discover additional information, but NONE of that info is embedded into the Passport itself.

Cheers,
Terry

Yes, you are absolutely right and I have had that confirmed by the UK Criminal Records Bureau themselves where I spoke to a senior officer. He said that it seems to be a commonly held misconception that this information is held in the chip. The absolute fact of the matter is that information is flagged up ONLY if a warrant is current or if the passport holder is currently on a Watch Lists, but this information is not on the passport itself.

What actually happens is that there are lists of wanted people, for whatever reason. These are notified to all the UK airports separately, nothing to do with the passport. When it's scanned, if the holder's name is on one of those lists, it immediately alerts the official who then takes action, if it is appropriate. The Watch Lists are not just UK individuals, but also people who are wanted in other countries and whose names have been issued by Interpol to the UK authorities. For example people suspected of terrorist activities.

I truly do wish people would get the right information. The CRB told me that they are not in the business of stopping every single person who might have had a DUI or whatever and not appeared in court. It's only major offences or someone awaiting sentencing or on bail that they don't want skipping the country.

I really like your comments - with the added twist of.. "I've just been told by the CRB (as if)".
Plus please - get yourselves to Specsavers. I never said the info was on the passport. I said when the passport is checked - the info about any warrants will come up.
And if you care to go to Arrivals at T's. 1,2 & 3 at MAN in digital lines - once you're through, you can see the scanners working on the desks.
You really do need to put up more than 27 bits between you - before coming up with crap like you've both posted and expect people to actually believe all the rubbish you've written here.
Oh and *14.... I really do wish (as I'm sure many others do to) that soon - you'll actually get a life.

What, including the bit where you say I said things in my post - that I clearly didn't?
Oh dear - you really have lost the plot.
I'll leave you to it - it's obvious you have great fun making up stories. Don't let anyone stop you. You're no harm really.

Yes you did say that, and I said that current warrants and information were flagged up on a watch list, which is exactly what is happening on those scanners when they scan the passport for both UK residents and non-residents. So what exactly is your point? If you have one that is.

I can't help thinking that your contribution would have a lot more credibility if you were actually polite, but since you aren't, I can only assume that you're one of these people who believe that they are always right and everyone else is wrong. If you want to think like that then that's fine by me.

I personally posted what I had found out on here because once I started searching for clarification I realised that there was a lot of crap flying about the internet on this subject. If you had read the first post you would have seen that. I simply wanted to put some information that I had discovered from the relevant sources down somewhere so that people would read and wouldn't panic about what actually happens.

Why is it that the only thing people can say to each other is 'get a life' when they object to anything that's said, no matter how rational? What is so wrong about putting real information down for people to see? There were certainly enough panic-stricken questions on the subject on other sites.

And in fact, I did call the UK Criminal Records Bureau and I did ask them to clarify the issue. What I quoted was exactly what they told me and I simply couldn't give a rat's ass whether you believe me or not.

I like this thread, its info and the way most of the people here react upon eachother. Especially for Shem and CheersT: it is better not to react upon flyingbob, as your assumption above is right I am afraid, as history here on TP has proved a bit I am afraid. Anyway, keep up the good work and let the game continue;)

Hehe...thanks for that. I must admit I was gobsmacked when I read FlyingBob's post. I thought I had entered an alternate universe!

It was almost as if he didn't want anyone to have some decent info, which is all CheersT and myself were trying to give. I was just so confused on other sites when I saw all the hysterical stuff, I decided to find out for myself and post it somewhere sensible!
