I have four mates from the UK who are living in South Australia at the moment without any certificate, even one of my best Australian Mates is working in a bar as a bartender without a certificate.

Just hand out your resume to a few places when your down and you will bound to get a job.

If not, think the license is around $150 (if you speak to a job agency I think you will get a discount.)

That is the worry with buying a car, I'd have no idea what to do if it broke down in the middle of nowhere! I'll look into buses and things to see what the best way is. Not sure how long I'd stay in each area, I might stay longer in some places if I really like it. I'm hoping to go for a year but that depends on whether I can get work and how long my money lasts..

Hi angela, are you planning on staying in melbourne for the year or travelling around too? I'm nowhere near ready to book flights yet so I suppose I will have to pay more :( Is it best to book your flight before you apply for your visa or after? I just want to book a one way flight as I don't know when I want to come back and from where. I thought you could get WHVs for about £140 - wheres the best place to get it from?

I think the bar certificate you can only get in australia and it costs about £75 to do the course which is like a day or two long? I looked into it a while ago but looks fairly simple to get one.

The official department of immigration website. Any third party would need to go through there as well, and would need the same information from you as you fill in at the official website, charging you extra for it.
The current fee is AUD $235, which works out to £150.

Hey thanks for all the advise! I think if there is an increase due to tax it might happen in April rather than Jan but i could be totally wrong. The deals you managed to find are really good! I was planning on getting a one-way ticket to Cairns mabye. The distance between Cairns and Brisbane is like the length of the entire UK i think. I was going to wait til i got the visa before getting a flight.

Where are you guys thinking about staying when in Cairns? Hostel then flat? or jumping from hostel to hostel? Most only allow for 1 month max. stay which isn't long for getting a job. I know some harvest jobs provide accomodation.

I've done the Scotland equivalent of the certificate so i was going to put that on my CV and see if I could wing it. Guess it might depend where you are trying to get a job.

Also browsing through the other forums if people are wanting to spend New Year/Christmas in Sydney we may need to consider a flat or something. Most hostels/hotels/etc need to be booked June/July. Sydney is really popular for that time of year....

I am soooo excited!!

Im a 25yr old lad from Manchester and I apln on going over to Melbourne somewhere near the middle of July after I have gone back to Thailand for another month.
Also going on a 12month working visa as most people are doing.

For those of you travelling alone...I did it a few months ago round Thailand. Don't worry about it. It's the first time I have done anything like it and it was the best thing I ever did! Hence the travel bug biting me on my ass!! haha

Hope to see as many as you as possible in Oz! drinks will be included no doubt haha

im planing on staying in melbourne for a few weeks to begin with then head up to cairns then just see what happens to be honest. ive booked my flights first but the travel agents always advise to get your visa sorted first but the guy i booked with at the flight center said booking just now for the summer is plenty of time to get the visa sorted.
how much money do you think is needed if your planing going for a year on a whv?

I haven't booked yet or got my whv!

I haven't got the money yet to do anything. I was wondering when is best to get my visa sorted. I have been out of work for a while so I need to save for a few months first but I want to leave in June for Thailand and then Oz in July.

Do you need the £2000 or however much it is in your account before applying for the working visa?

I am planning on saving about £3000 before setting off to Thailand for a month and then Oz. I will be grabbing work as soon as I can in Oz so I can start the pennies rolling!
Once you are in work you shouldn't need much money saved, just enough as an emergency fund I reckon!

I am thinking of just staying on hostels when I arrive in Cairns. I probably won't stay there too long. I'm planning on travelling down the coast to end up in Sydney for christmas and new years. I dont know how easy it is to rent a flat for travellers but it might be a good idea for that time of year and I'll probably stay there longer than other places.

I'm not sure about the money thing when applying for your visa. I dont know if you definitely need to have it in your account before you apply or whether you just need it by the time you leave. I'm probably going to take about £5000 just to make sure I have plenty in case I cant find a job!

Happy New Year everyone!

Not sure how much money i'm taking yet. Think i may attempt to work quite a bit to try and keep my funds ticking along.

petenico did you find it easy to meet people while you were travelling around? did a lot of people seem to travel alone? Or did you spend most of it yourself travelling around?
