I am planning on going to australia for about 6 months I will be 18 in july . My family live in sydney/perth so im ok for living but I was just wandering about this medicare thing? I am planning on getting a working holiday visa (12 months) but what else do i need to do??

Hi aj,

For your medicare you just apply for a medicare card so you dont have to pay to see the doctor. I think i done it online, its pretty straight forward. They send you your credit sized card through the post.

When you are out there you will need to go on the government website and apply for your TFN (tax file number) this is so you can work. When you arrive back home you can claim all your tax back, which is a nice bonus!!!

oh and you will need to sort out a bank account, this is really easy as well, most travellers use Commonwealth, ANZ, there is another one, i can't think what its called. you just go in and ask to set up a current account...simples!!

Thats all i think, its not as daunting as it all seems at first. good luck and enjoy...

I'm doing the exact same thing, i'll be heading out there at the end of June and will be staying until the end ofaugust wilst having my 18th out there in July. I have found it really depends on what you want to do, speaking to others most tend to go up the east coast which is what i'm doing and start in sydney and make their way up to cairns (or vice versa). For travel there is oz experience or greyhound, greyhound is supposed t be the more reliable and they have a hop on hop off ticket, buy a ticket between two destinations, get on stop off along the way see the sights and continue your journey. Also in all cities there are many many hostels which allow for cheap accomodation
