Hi Everyone :-)

I am planning to go to Australia March\April time. Hoping to travel and work for the year. I was going to start in Sydney, but after reading everyones posts, you all seem to be starting in Cairns.

Were will you head after Cairns? Why is it so popular? I have made no plans at all and am just starting to research everything now. Going to book my flight in the next couple of weeks. Just trying to work out where to :-)

Hi Paul,

I'm starting in Cairns for 2 reasons really - 1) I want to visit northern Queensland why it's still dry season and it'll be warmer there when I arrive than further south. 2) It seemed to make sense to start at one end and work my way down, than end up doubling back on myself if I started in Sydney. I also want to be in Sydney or Melbourne by Dec. So maybe that's 3 reasons!

More generally, I want to visit the Cairns area to go to Cape Tribulation and i've heard the Tully River has the best white water rafting in Oz! Got to do that!!

In response to Leigh's earlier question, am going to get my phone unlocked and get an ozzy sim. Definately getting a bank account when I arrive too.

Has anyone considered STA Travel's 3-day working holiday arrival package for Cairns? I was contemplating it, but not sure...

Yep i want to start in Cairns just because I plan to go sometime between july-august and thats when the weather will be good in Cairns at that time of year and not so good further down the coast! And as Tracy said it makes sense to start at one end and work my way down. I want to go to Cairns mainly to visit the great barrier reef

I dont really know about the packages that STA do. What does the that package include?

Thanks for your reply :-)

As im leaving in March I might be better off starting In sydney and heading north as the weather will get better the further north as the months go on?? Is this right?

I am gonna unlock my phone and get a sim when i get there. Was thinking of taking a Netbook with me as well? Is this a good idea or will it be better to use internet cafes?

Also what size backpack is everyone taking? Im not sure what I should pack and what I should leave behind.

What type of work are you going to be looking for?

Thanks :)

I've just read that its not such a good idea to spend the summer months in the northern part of the country as it gets very hot and humid and its the rainy season. Youre better off visiting that area in the winter months as its still quite warm but more bareable. I think the rainy season is something like november-may so if youre going in march then going from sydney could be better for you!

I'm going to rely on internet cafes, I'd be worried about losing my laptop or it being stolen or something. Besides I dont really have one small enough. No idea about packing yet, not thought that far ahead. As for work, I am up for anything really. I'd be happy to do harvest work but I'll probably try to get something like bar/cafe work if I can :)

I'm taking a 65L backpack, will try to 'pack light'! Just the essentials really, which for a woman is pretty much everything!!

The STA package includes airport pickup, 2nts hostel, day trip to Great Barrier Reef, sim card, help setting up bank a/c and getting tax file number, and 12 months membership to an online job agency. Not sure if it's worth £220 or if its better to just do it all solo?!

It does worry me a bit to do everything by myself but it would save me money. I was looking at hostels in Cairns the other day and quite a few will pick you up from the airport for free anyway. Sorting out the bank account and tax file number doesnt seem too difficult to do, or getting a sim card. I definitely want to see the great barrier reef but wouldnt want to pay that much really, I'm going to look around for the best deals

I think you're right, have decided to ditch the package idea completely, and have booked to my first week at Gilligan's Backpackers hostel. woo!
