cperigen has indicated that this thread is about Honduras

I'll be traveling to Honduras next month for a solo backpacking trip. Any suggestions on where to stay (hostels), how to get around and what to do?

I'll be flying into San Pedro Sulas.

Also, how difficult is it to go from Honduras to El Salvador for a visit?

what cities do you plan to visit and how much time are you going to spend here?? san pedro sula is a good city to use as a home base cause you can go to copan which is a great small town with famous mayan ruins (3 hour bus ride) or go to tela for a day nice beach (like a 1 hour bus) or other coastal cities, i recommend going to utila which is one of the bay island which is not that expensive with a great backpacker atmosphere, especially if you want to learn to dive has a great coral riff.

if you give me what type of activities and what you like to see i can give you better tips, going to salvador from tegucigalpa is easy there are a couple of good bus services one is tica bus you can check them here http://www.ticabus.com/ i have used them myself one tip i can offer is if you going to use them take cash when you buy your ticket because they dont take credit cards at the tegucigalpas terminal.

so tell me more of what your plans and i will be glad to help. take care

Get out of San Pedro Sula as soon as you can. I love Honduras and have been there many times....But SPS is a pretty dangerous place. Head off to Tela. Spend a couple of days, then head through to the bay islands and La Ceiba... More later.

Piecar,

Thanks for the tip - I have heard the same about SPS. I am only attempting to fly in to there then head north or over to the Caribbean. Any suggestions on destinations is much appreciated.

I speak fluent Spanish, which may prove helpful, but am looking to get outdoors, enjoy the country and stay as safe as possible.

Would love to hear more.

Christine

I have 8 days there and I liked how SPS was so central to some of the areas I really want to visit. I'm a very outdoorsy person and love history and architecture. I also love to meet new people and eat good food :o)

The trip is really open for new experiences. I just don't want to go in naive. I would like to be well prepared for the country and what kinds of encounters I may have but also want to have an adventure (an educated adventure, if you will). I want to be outside, hike, be in the water, see the ancient ruins, etc. I'd love to follow other backpackers' trails and meet other packers along the way.
