I just spent 4 days in Christchurch a few weeks ago. It's a really nice city, with a great feel to it. Not too much in terms of action (Queenstown is best then) if that's what you're after, but it's a 'cozy' city. Has a nice city center too and decent surfing....

I don't think 11 days is enough for all of the north and all of the south, but you can get quite a bit done in that time if you focus on one of the islands. We headed north from christchurch and spent 5-6 days on the north island. A couple of days more and we would have been able to see a few things we skipped now but it's always like that I think :)

If you are heading to Christchurch and planning to fly out of it again as well, stick to the South island in terms of things to see and do.

How's the food like? It's fine. Different flavours for everyone, just like in most cities these days.

Accommodation in Christchurch ?

No need 5 star luxury.....just a 3-4 star, comfy one will do. recommendations ??:)

Christchurch is a nice place, but as stated a little quiet. The beach life at Sumner is good, some nice cafe's too!

South Island is the place for scenery and if you get the chance the whale watching at Kaikoura is a great day out http://web.ukonline.co.uk/jeff.jane/diary-days/diary-day14.html.

Also, a flight over the Mount Cook area is higly recommended, just stunning views.

Have a good trip.

im in the south island at the moment. you could see alot of the south island in 11 days if you go with a company, im travelling with stray. christchurch is nice but you would be bored if you stayed there 11 days.so far with stray iv swam with seals in kaikoura, kayaked in abel tasmen, made my own knife from scratch in barrytown, and in an hour im about to go hike up franz joseph glacier. and in between all that iv seen some of the most amazing scenery and im only half way around the island. and all that is in 7 days so far. you can do alot more than i did if you have the money, like skydiving etc.
