I am a single 23 year female from Wakefield West Yorkshire planning on going travelling for 6 months possibily longer if i decide to work. Departing end of Oct, early Nov 2011.

The order i am thinking about doing it is New Zealand first, then onto Australia, and end in Asia.
Spending approximatley -
4 weeks in New Zealand (late oct, early nov 2011)
6 weeks in Oz (mid dec 2011)
30 day tour in Asia ( bangkok, malaysia, loas, cambodia, vietnam) not 100% sure of the order. (jan 2012)
and then the rest of the time (3 and half months around the islands of thailand, reason been i want to be make my money last as long as possible.

Cost -
Each month i have budgeted approx £1000 GBP for NZ and OZ
Approx £600-£700 for Asia a month
Would this be about right?
I am goin to take a credit card out with me just incase for other things i do such as a sky dive, bungee jump etc how much approx would activities like this cost me?

I have been told the order in which im doing it in will work out well as it will be summer in Oz and the best weather in thailand is around the time i will be going. Is this correct?

In Oz im not sure whether to travel the east coast up or down? what are your suggestions? i was going to spend xmas and new year in sydney, would that be a good idea?

I was against working as i mainly want to travel and have fun, but i have been told working in Australia is really beneficial as you can make a lot of money there and then possibly extend the amount of time i am able to travel. Im just worried about wasting a working visa as i have been told you are only entitled to one in your lifetime? and didne know whether to save it and come back from travelling and then think about working somewhere for a full year.

Sorry for wittering on im just majorly stressed at the moment as im thinking about getting my flights booked at the end of this month, and really need to know more info before i tie myself into anything.

If you have any advice or information to give me it would be much appriciated :)

Hey Rachael

First of all congratulations on deciding to go travelling, it'll be the best time of your life. Your itinerary is pretty similar to the places I visited - I went South-East Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.

I would say around £600 to £700 for Asia a month is about right, and for that you can live very well! Decent accommodation, eating out every night, and going out most nights.

I was spending around £1000 a month in New Zealand and Oz, but that was being very frugal with my money. Very rarely going out drinking (usually getting cheap goon and drinking it in the hostel), always preparing my own meals and generally being careful about my money. Australia is very expensive, while NZ is slightly less so, but in my opinion, there is so much more to do in NZ you end up spending more!

South-East Asia is an amazing part of the world, but I would say don't spend 3 and a haslf months solid in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia are equally amazing and equally cheap, so spend a bit more time in those countries too. Oh and try to get to the Gili Islands - you will have a fantastic time there.

I worked in Oz and NZ, but only because I was 30 when I left home, so right at the limit with regards to applying for a working visa. I got a job in Oz easily and earnt good money, and have just got a job in NZ fairly quickly on good money.

I would say it wouldn't make too much difference if you travel up or down the coast of Oz seeing as you will only be there for 6 weeks. I spent Xmas and New Year in Sydney, and had a good time, but be prepared for it being busy and even more expensive than usual!

Any question drop me a line and I'll try to help!
