Anyone got any good cheap tips for travelling around the US from New York to Los Angeles via New Orleans, Las Vegas and Sanfrancisco? The cheapest I have found is a grayhound pass - any ideas?

I think Grayhound is the cheapest way of getting around in the USA. Unfortunately, there are no low-cost airlines like easyjet etc. available here. That sounds like a great trip you are planning!

If you are an overseas visitor you can get a rail pass on Amtrak which will get you to the desitinations that you mention. While it is slightly more expensive than the greyhound, you get reasonably comfy seats to sit/sleep in and you can walk around whenever you want to stretch you legs.. you can also get food on there too which was ok when i did it in 97.. Hope this helps:)
