Discount cards in Australia are a dime a dozen these days...

I don't have any experience with the IYTC, but the YHA one is useful if you are planning to stay in YHA affiliated hostels a lot. If not, then don't bother. You can still stay at a YHA without this card, you'll just need to pay an extra few dollars a night which goes towards you getting a YHA card. So, you could end up with one after all if you don't buy it outright at the start.

Another good one is the VIP card. Costs 25 dollars or so and allows for discounts in tons of hostels as well as quite a few tours and stuff....

HTH,

Sam

I reckon the BBH card is much better than the VIP card for New Zealand, they do all the best hostels that I've stayed at, and they've got a handy booklet which tells you how other people have rated the hostels - the ratings seem to be pretty accurate too. Same story as YHA or VIP, you get $2-$5 off per night. Wish I'd bought one. I don't think they do Australia though.

I'm flying to Australia tomorrow meself. Anyone have an opinion on what the most useful hostel card is there?

VIP is definitely the best for Oz, and BBH is definitely the best for NZ. If you're going to both however then it depends on how long you plan to spend in NZ as to whether it's worth buying a BBH as well as a VIP. I'd say it's probably better just to stick with the VIP as there are still quite a few hostels in NZ which take this, so on the few occasions that you have to stay at a BBH exclusive hostel then the additional cost probably won't merit buying the BBH card.

vip is good for OZ but from what iv seen BBH is the best one for NZ. i went around a bunch of hostels in queenstown and about 3 out of 5 took BBH.
