When I travel, I used to bring jeans and a jacket. I am using a water-proof bag also.

Once upon a time I used to pack a narrow mind, but soon I discovered it's the very last thing you need as a traveler.

I always pack too many shoes, jewelry, stupid stuff like that.

For our UK trip, I'm going to pack one pair of walking shoes, one pair of flippies, and one pair of heels.

I plan on wearing most of my clothes for multiple days, and they will almost all be comfortable clothes, with one nice outfit for any dinners we might have. If I wear an outfit in Scotland, no one will know I wore the same thing in London! :)

I also roll my clothes, so they take up less room. I've got all my makeup/toiletries down to one smallish thing (about 8" by 4" by 5") plus a brush. If you're gone a long time you can always go to a laundry mat or dry cleaners to refresh your clothes. I'd much rather do that than pack 10 outfits.

I wouldn't pack an umbrella because you can buy them on the cheap.

I wouldn't pack anything but a couple bandaids, unless you're going into the wilderness.

I wouldn't pack anything that I don't use on a daily basis while at home, because lord knows I won't need it in a different country.

Jeans is a good one.

I pack a fairly extensive first aid kit with me, and have used it a few times. Mostly for bandaids and Tyenol cold medicine, which is a part of the kit. I started to pack my own meds ever since the time I caught a nasty cold in Italy and couldn't find anything that worked. It almost ruined my trip. At least now, I have what I know works and don't have to run around a foreign country trying to find something when I'm sick.

My least used item are the guide books. I did pack one when I first started, but now adays I try to find all the info I need at the local tourist office
and/or do my preparations before hand. Quite frankly, I don't have time to read a guide book while sight seeing. Can't multi-task that much!
