Definitely too much for amount of time you have. Personally I'd just do a single day in Hanoi as it wasn't one of my favorite spots, but you can easily do a 4-5 days in Hoi An. if it were me, in that much time I'd do Sapa, Halong Bay and Hoi An. Do Hue as a day trip if you are feeling bored and since time is of the essence fly from Datong to either Hanoi or Ho Chi Min to fly out.

and i do think even that is very rushed!

I think itinerary suggested by '1hit7kiled' is very rushed if you only have 10 days in Vietnam and want to travel by land transport. So you need to work out on your itinerary. It is better if you select few spots and explore them deeply to have a great time. You can try the other ones next time. Personally I feel Hanoi and Halong Bay are the must visit spots and not to miss.

I was in Vietnam - Ho Chi Mihn city last year for the Tet Festival --

Unfortunatley you wont make it this year as its currently in progess but for anyone else planning a trip its a good time to visit - the weather is pleasant - warm and sunny and little humidity

Dont forget that the actual dates of the Tet ( New Year ) changes each year.

HCM city is a good place to base yourself if you wish to visit the Delta and the Tunnels from the war.

[ Edit: Sorry, no promos please. ]
