August in Italy is quite hot. Rome and Florence are good places to start with. You can take a train to Florence from Rome. If you love art then Florence is a great destination. It offers so much to see. It has many lovely museums, gardens, churches, squares and streets. Of course Venice is also a wonderful spot. I completely agree with as said by 'daisan' that you should rent a car or bike to travel around various spots. It will offer you more flexibility to visit deeper areas as well and you can take breaks to relax and enjoy your trip. -snip-

Cinque Terra
You must go to Rome....

Lake Cuomo is also beautiful if you can afford it - maybe George Clooney will let you stay at his house there!

My husband and I went to Rome, Florence, and Cinque Terra. I would definately recommend at least those three. I wish we could have done Venice, but it was December and we were worried about floods. We also rented a car and it made travel really easy. I'm sure whatever you decide you'll have a great time!!

I also wanted to add...if you decide to visit the Uffizi and Accademia in Florence or go to the Vatican, make sure to reserve tickets online. This saved us hours of waiting in lines!

I would like to suggest to visit Sardinia island. The majestic island of Sardinia is located off the west coast of Italy just below the island of Corsica. The landscape of this stunning island is incredibly varied from white sandy beaches on the coast to the mountainous terrain in the central parts of the island. Also varied array of architecture and culture.Famous the world over the beaches of Sardinia are truly something that must be seen to be believed. Crystal clear waters and white sand that runs for miles, Sardinia truly is a touch of paradise in the Mediterranean.
Last July 2 weeks I with my friends had unforgettable time here. We were staying in South of Sardinia, 15 km from the island capital Cagliari. -snip- We were very pleased with the local beauty and very kind hospitality. Great time..wish to come back again.:)
