Eight hours? Personally, I wouldn't risk it. I've never been to Japan, but just checking out and then checking back in, getting through customs, traffic, etc. etc. can cut your time down pretty significantly. You may find yourself rushing back in a panic to make your flight.

That said, one friend had a four-hour stopover in Zurich and headed downtown to drink as much local beer as possible. He could have sweet-talked his way onto the next flight out, if needed, though.

I wouldn't risk it either. I stayed overnight in Tokyo, in a hotel near Narita Airport, and my flight wasn't until 4pm the next day, but still I didn't step out of the hotel. One thing you have to reckon with is the traffic, which can be a killer and eat up your time. You'd just end up travelling more than you'd really want. There are plenty of shops in the airport if you want to do some shopping.

But if you really want to take a walk or something, ask Information if they have any recommendations. The Japanese are pretty helpful and I'm sure they'll get you something that works out okay, given your flight schedule.

I would just stay at the airport. It takes quite a while to get from the airport to the centre of Tokyo, and when I was going back to the airport the train I was on only went halfway and then started heading back to Tokyo, so it can be quite confusing if you don't read kanji. It's not worth the risk.

You did not tell which airport are you arriving Japan. If you arrive Tokyo Narita it is about 70 Km away from the city center. It is quite far and very incovenient.

I live in Japan for 2 years and it is a pain everytime I have to go abroad. I have to take subways and then train to arrive the airport.

But just to give you an idea, since the plane lands I take 2h30m to arrive my place in the center of the city. Depending when you are coming you may face a huge line in immigration. Before having Japanese visa, once I stayed in the line for 2 hours.

If you have only 6 hours, just keep in the terminal building. Have a shower or take a nap, as there are shower rooms and small rooms you rent by the hour. I used the shower once when I want in transit and it made me feel like new!
