Hi,
I'm going to Australia at the end of April :) I'm flying to Sydney on 20th and doing OzIntro there. Hoping to be able to travel a bit up the east coast before I have to get a job!
It's scary thinking of going somewhere so far away on my own though!

hey
Aoife, like Leona said, u dont get asked about ur destination at all. I did get asked what date i plan on going when i applied online but u dont have to stick with that at all.
hi helen, that Ozintro thing looks great fun and it wud be great way to meet others.
was looking at ur other post bout ur packing list. o my god, i really not looking forward to packing, i will want to bring everything !! how will i be able to decide what to bring :-)from reading stuff online, most people say to have a suitcase rather than backpack, like suitcase with wheels..easier to bring around?

Hey, just been reading through a few of you comments. Aoife and Rikki i c ur both thinkn bout arriving in cairns first, thats what im doing also. I asked alot of ppl b4 booking and they told me if your going in the australia winter cairns is the best place to go because its tropical al year round there. also i hear its really easy to get farm work ther and as u mentioned aoife with the disasters mite be some clear up work.

I have 2 friends who went out two years ago and worked in tully which is not far from cairns. They said it was a great wee town for fruit picking and they loved it esp with the good weather.

Hey fi, im DREADING packing. ive soo many clothes that i really dont want to part with. id love to take a suitcase but ive been told that a rucksack is the best way to go so i dnt know. Ive been looking at rucksacks on the internet and its hard to decided which one would be best. I came across that site below and ther seems to be good rucksacks on it and a few with wheels. they seem quite cheap to.

ive soo many clothes that i really dont want to part with.

Those are exactly the clothes you should leave at home. Since you'll take only relatively few clothes with you when travelling for a long time, you'll wear and wash them all comparatively much more often than you would otherwise, and so they'll show wear much earlier than they'd have otherwise. Basically, if going travelling for a year, be prepared to throw away all the clothes you took with you at the end of that year.

id love to take a suitcase but ive been told that a rucksack is the best way to go so i dnt know. Ive been looking at rucksacks on the internet and its hard to decided which one would be best.

Don't decide based upon what you see on the internet. Instead, walk into an actual store, and try them on! (The good stores will have material at hand to weigh down the backpacks, so you get a real feel for how they'd fit on your back.)

It's as with shoes (or at least shoes you intend to walk in), you really must feel how a particular shoe fits on your feet. Same with backpacks - some frames will just fit you personally well and allow you to walk with them comfortably, and other really won't.

Ive heard that 40 - 45 l is the best size rucksack to bring but again it all depends on ur frame so trying them on in the store is always good! Plus to bring a backpack for every day!

Sinead,

i was wondering about how busy of a place cairns is to fly into (for meeting people), ive found a name of a couple of good hostels that seem really lively! Ill def look up tully, did ur friends say anything else about cairns or where else they got work around there?? When date u flying into cairns?

Sorry for all the questions :)

heyy,

ask away, im the same. have been asking anyone i know who has been out ther. ive heard that cairns is really busy and gud craic. i know alot of ppl seem 2 fly ther neway and when i bkd the flights the travel agent had been ther and advised us 2 do it that way also.

My friends said tully is only a small town but that alot of backpackers wer ther and they seemed to have met lots of ppl ther. they worked ther for a couple of months and saved a gud bit of money to go travelling with then. i havnt been talkn 2 them in awhile now as they are still out ther but i must mail them and ask them did they hear of newher else you could get work.

Oh the travel agent also said that usually in the hostels ther are notice boards up with ppl advertising fruit picking work and other farm work in the small near by towns so shud have no problem getting that. me and my friend are flying into cairns on the 27th june bt have nowher bkd 2 stay yet. when we get that sortd i could let u know where we are staying? the travel agent was a young guy and seemed to know all the lively places.

have u booked ur flights yet?

Hey girl. I'm not going to Australia. But I'm a 21 year old female, and I'm traveling alone to Europe from the US this Summer. I'm nervous to travel alone, but also really excited. I think it will be a good experience, and from reading these forums I have seen that many people travel alone! I'm sure you will have SUCH a blast. Good luck on your travels!!!
